The 2026 Oscar nominations are here…and well, yeah!

Pretty much everything you’d expect to see nominated for the 2026 Academy Awards were present and accounted for, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners leading the pack with 16 nominations. Even the small surprises can hardly be considered shocking, particularly when it comes to the best supporting actress category.

While Ariana Grande earned Golden Globe and Actors Award nominations for her role as Glinda in Wicked: For Good, she wasn’t among the five actors nominated for an Academy Award like last year. Instead, Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku was included among this year’s group of nominees after being snubbed by Golden Globes voters. She will be facing off against Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Amy Madigan (Weapons), and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another).

In fact, Wicked: For Good was awarded zero nominations at this year’s Academy Awards—and you don’t need to be a sequel hater to understand why that was the right call. Objectively, the first Wicked sinema was far more critically acclaimed than this year’s follow-up. If Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and director Jon M. Chu didn’t take home gold at the height of the film’s popularity, that was unlikely to change this year. And if that’s the case, isn’t it better to hold space for other talent in those categories?

Even Wicked: For Good fans on social media seem more shocked by its omission from the costume, hair, and makeup categories than anything else. But considering the filmmakers already nabbed 10 total nominations and two Oscars for best costume design and best production design in 2025, Academy voters probably felt they’d already celebrated the cast and crew’s incredible achievements. And that’s fair.
