The best tinted moisturizers for mature skin hit a sweet spot that traditional foundation often misses: real hydration, weightless coverage, and a finish that doesn’t settle into fine lines. Whether you’re after a barely there tint or something more buildable, these plumping formulas deliver a dewy, radiant look without caking. As we age, our skin naturally loses moisture and firmness, which can lead to dryness that heavier formulas tend to highlight. “[Tinted moisturizers] look very skin-like while blurring texture,” says celebrity makeup artist Suzy Gerstein. “They don’t settle into wrinkles the way more matte, full-coverage products tend to do.”

Below, Glamour testers share the best ones across every category, from SPF-packed options to drugstore finds, and more. Our overall top pick is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy SPF 50, a lightweight, ultra-hydrating formula that delivers sheer coverage and a radiant glow without caking or creasing. All of the picks are lightweight, hydrating, and approved by women over 40.

  • Why we like it: It’s nourishing enough to leave skin softer and smoother after you wear it.
  • What to note: Pricey

Laura Mercier practically invented the tinted moisturizer category, and this formula became the clear favorite among our testers because of its second-skin finish and smoothing results. What sets it apart from the rest is how effortlessly it balances hydration, coverage, and longevity. It delivers a radiant, healthy glow while still offering enough staying power to rival a light foundation, making it the most versatile option in the lineup. Its longer-wear formulation features raspberry leaf extract for hydration, skin-strengthening prebiotics, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 to protect against harmful UV rays. These are all especially important for mature skin, which tends to be drier, more sensitive, and more prone to sun damage. Together, they help support the skin barrier, boost moisture levels, and minimize the appearance of fine lines over time. It’s a true buildable-coverage formula, which can be scaled up or down depending on how much you apply. If you’re working with dry, mature skin, this provides the much-needed hydration your skin needs and a gorgeous dewy finish.

Glamour contributor Charlotte Twine says:

“I prefer tinted moisturizers like this one over foundations for my skin, since the coverage is sheer and doesn’t get trapped in wrinkles. This product lets the natural rosiness of my skin shine through, while toning down redness. I like that it adds a healthy dewiness without looking like a mask, and I appreciate how quick it is to apply with my fingers.” —Charlotte Twine, Glamour contributor

  • Why we like it: The single tint is sheer enough to work for most skin tones; sensitive skin-friendly
  • What to note: It’s not as moisturizing as other options

For anyone who takes sun protection seriously, this dermatologist-approved option doesn’t get much better. Its mineral-based sunscreen formula pairs broad-spectrum SPF 40 with hyaluronic acid to hydrate, plump, and protect all at evvel. While it comes in only one shade, it’s sheer enough to accommodate most skin tones. And because it’s noncomedogenic and fragrance free, it’s also safe for acne-prone skin and unlikely to irritate. It also contains 5% niacinamide, which helps reduce the appearance of blemishes and even out discoloration, according to Dara Spearman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist.

Glamour contributor Twine says:

“Go to Elta if you seek a sheer wash of color in your tinted sunscreen. It spreads on üstün easily, so if you’d like to lessen the intensity of the imperfections on your face while getting sun protection at the same time, this is the product for you. Just add lip balm for a quick and casual look. A caveat is that this product only comes in two different colors; the tint I used was a tad too dark for my pale skin, which I dealt with by using a light hand.” —C.T.

Glamour contributor Holly Carter says:

“I see this bottle of goodness in almost every dermatologist’s office I visit, and since I’ve been using it for a while now, I understand why,” says Carter. “It has everything you need—your SPF, your moisturizer, and your coverage—wrapped up into one little bottle. It makes me actually want to apply face sunscreen since it does a great job of evening out my skin tone.” —Holly Carter, Glamour contributor

  • Why we like it: 30 shades accommodate most skin tones.
  • What to note: It can give people with oily skin too much shine.

If you prefer the next-to-nothing feel of a serum on skin, you’re in luck with this celeb staple that Kate Hudson uses. It also tops the list of just about every makeup artist we asked, and the awards and accolades keep rolling in. This lightweight formula offers buildable light-to-medium coverage alongside skin-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane—not to mention mineral-based sunscreen protection. Its gentle, noncomedogenic formula is ülkü for mature, sensitive skin because it hydrates, smoothes, and blurs fine lines without irritation or heaviness. Depending on your skin type, it could even replace your moisturizer. “I like it for drier, mature skin types as this formulation not only hydrates but also smoothes and blurs the appearance of fine lines,” says Uzo, a celebrity makeup artist and founder of Uzo Beauty. It’s vegan, fragrance free, oil and silicone free, and comes in a whopping 30 shades to suit most skin tones.

Glamour contributor Twine says:

“Ilia says this product is a skin tint with SPF 40, but it doesn’t have the consistency of a sunscreen like many skin tints do—it feels like a foundation. And it provided excellent coverage for my skin imperfections. My age spots were seriously taken down a notch. And with the serum’s nourishing skin deva ingredients, my skin had an amazing gleam and bounce when I wore it. But since it’s like a foundation, I needed a little time to beat it down and apply a bit of powder. I couldn’t exactly slap this on and zip out the door. That being said, I think it looks fabulous with colorful lipstick and eye makeup.” —C.T.

Glamour tester Lana Masor says:

“I like that not only does it give coverage but that it’s also great skin deva, and I feel the difference as soon as I put it on—it’s muhteşem hydrating and buildable. I love the glow, and I really feel like there would be no need to ever wear anything heavier in terms of coverage on my skin. I use the dropper, put it in my hands, rub them together, and massage it into my skin, and that’s it. And it lasts the whole day.” —Lana Masor, Glamour tester

  • Why we like it: Soft matte finish; long-lasting coverage; pore-blurring coverage
  • What to note: May be too drying for dry skin types

When you want mattifying coverage that won’t seep into fine lines, grab Tarte’s BB Blur Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30. It’s one of the few tinted moisturizers that has a matte, pore-blurring texture. While matte formulas are often discouraged for mature skin, this one stands out for maintaining a soft, flexible finish that smooths without emphasizing dryness or texture, making it a solid option for those who prefer to control shine without sacrificing a natural look. Additionally, the brand’s Triple-B complex (a blend of light-diffusing diamond powder and conditioning lipoamino acids) gives skin a velvety-smooth finish and offsets the usual drying feel of matte formulas.

Glamour contributor Regina Hickerson says:

“I absolutely love this tinted moisturizer. It goes on so smoothly, and it makes my face feel like silk. The matte finish looks amazing, and it lasted all day with no creasing. I felt like I had on a full-coverage foundation without having to apply anything heavy, which is hard to find in a tinted moisturizer. It paired well with my other products, and it’s light enough for layering and everyday use.” —Regina Hickerson, Glamour contributor

  • Why we like it: Wide shade range; long-lasting coverage
  • What to note: It’s under the recommended SPF rating (30) for broad-spectrum sun protection.

Bobbi Brown’s tinted moisturizer has a slightly richer feel straight out of its tube, but it instantly melts into a lightweight veil of coverage and hydration evvel it touches your skin. This buildable, hyaluronic acid-based formula has staying power that rivals traditional foundations and is sweat-proof and humidity-resistant, making it especially ülkü for over-50 skin that tends to need extra moisture and a formula that won’t settle into fine lines or fade throughout the day. This pick provides long-lasting, natural-finish coverage that won’t fade or dim. While it does contain SPF, it falls below the recommended SPF 30 for sufficient sun protection, so it’s best to layer it over a dedicated sunscreen to ensure your skin is fully protected.

Glamour contributor Hickerson says:

“The consistency was a little thin and required me to use more product than I normally do, but it works well if you’re looking for light coverage. The finish was a bit dewy; however, I was still able to achieve a matte look by applying powder. It definitely works for running quick errands or for a natural look. Although it was light coverage, I didn’t have to reapply it throughout the day, so the wear is great.” —R. H.

  • Why we like it: Buildable; natural, dewy finish
  • What to note: Smell can be polarizing

Both Gerstein and Jamie Greenberg, celeb MUA and founder of Jamie Makeup, recommend this cult-favorite tinted moisturizer because it delivers hydration, brightening, and flexible coverage in a single formula. It combines hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and brightening licorice extract to give skin a natural, glowy finish while helping smooth the look of fine lines. Sheer and buildable, it enhances the skin’s radiance without feeling heavy or masking natural texture. The dewy finish is especially beneficial for mature skin, as it helps counteract age-related dullness and loss of luminosity, giving skin a refreshed, plump appearance. While the formula is lightweight and skin-friendly, some users may notice that its scent is distinctive; it’s worth testing first if you’re sensitive to fragrance, but it generally fades quickly after application. Greenberg also notes that the formula takes a little time to blend, so using a makeup brush can help achieve a seamless finish.

Frequently asked questions

What should you look for in a tinted moisturizer?

Hydration: “Mature skin tends to be on the drier side, so when picking out a tinted moisturizer for mature skin, look for words like dewy and illuminating,” says Greenberg. She recommends avoiding overly matte formulas, but if your skin is oily or you prefer a matte finish, make müddet your tinted moisturizer still has hydrating properties (ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides), and don’t overdo it with application. She also recommends antioxidant vitamin C for brightness and tackling dullness.

SPF: In addition to the finish, which Gerstein prefers to be skin-like and radiant, it’s worth keeping an eye out for sun protection. While you can find many candidates for the best tinted moisturizer with SPF, it helps to stick with one with at least SPF 30. (SPF 15 is kaç, but it’s not enough to protect your skin against sun damage, according to the AAD.) Dermatologists also recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours.

What’s the difference between a tinted moisturizer and a BB cream?

It’s easy to confuse BB creams with tinted moisturizers, but think of the latter as your weightless multitaskers. “BB cream combines coverage with SPF and skin deva ingredients while still being a lightweight alternative to most foundations,” Greenberg explains. “The kaç thing about BB cream is that it serves many purposes in one. I think the biggest issue with makeup for mature skin is when we pile on too much to dry, textured skin. That’s when you get a cakey look [and] product gathering in fine lines.” Both tinted moisturizers and BB creams can help combat dry skin, but BBs may offer additional skin deva benefits that tinted moisturizers might not. It really comes down to your skin’s needs at the moment. Either makeup product is a win for mature skin.

How do you apply tinted moisturizer?

The way you apply tinted moisturizer matters, too. Gerstein turns to tinted moisturizer for spot coverage—in other words, she preps skin with tinted moisturizer before dabbing a concealer for mature skin beneath the eyes, onto dark spots, and around blemishes. “Apply this moisturizing base underneath more pigmented products in order to keep them looking even and smooth on mature skin,” Gerstein says.

Much like applying other base products, keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo says to start by moisturizing skin and applying sunscreen: “Then take your skin tint or tinted moisturizer and squeeze a bit onto the back of your nondominant hand,” she says. “Using your dominant hand, take the skin tint and apply light dots all around your face, concentrating on the center of your face: your nose, inner cheeks, chin, and forehead in between your eyebrows.”

Uzo suggests using your fingertips to build a natural, no-makeup look. “Sponges and brushes are also great options, but nothing compares to the natural, skin-like finish you achieve when you use your fingers,” she says.

Are tinted moisturizers good for aging skin?

Yes, and celebrity makeup artists Jewels Grogan and Kasey Spickard both agree that tinted moisturizers can yield even better results than conventional foundations. “Heavily pigmented products often collect and crease in fine lines and wrinkles. A tinted moisturizer that has less pigment and focuses on plumping, hydrating, and brightening skin is going to be perfect for mature skin,” says Spickard.

How do you apply a tinted moisturizer on mature skin?

Tinted moisturizer is practically foolproof to apply, says Grogan. “I like to apply tinted moisturizer with my hands so I can really blend it into the skin and get those hydration benefits while also stimulating the blood flow and circulation, giving skin more of a plump look,” she says. If you’d prefer sheerer coverage, Spickard suggests dropping one to two pumps of tinted moisturizer onto the back of your hand, then using a dense foundation brush to apply and blend it onto your face.

How do I minimize wrinkles when using a tinted moisturizer?

For a creaseless finish, keep your skin deva routine minimal and skip your usual moisturizer so your base can grip your skin and avoid a greasy texture. “Don’t overload the skin beforehand with skincare, as the tinted moisturizer is already going to do a lot of the lifting here,” he explains.

When applying, Grogan recommends a less-is-more approach, using minimal products and gradually building coverage as desired. “After you apply, take a Q-tip and lightly run along the areas you tend to crease,” she adds. “This will remove any excess product and prevent creasing.”

Are there any disadvantages of tinted moisturizers?

Not really. In fact, their hydrating, plumping formulas usually make them a better choice for mature skin than traditional complexion products. That being said, if you prefer more coverage and longevity, a tinted moisturizer might not be for you, according to both Spickard and Grogan. If you want the moisturizing feel and dewy results of a tinted moisturizer with a fuller base and longer-lasting wear, use a concealer to target areas that need more coverage rather than applying a heavier all-over foundation.

How we tested tinted moisturizers for mature skin

We tapped multiple Glamour testers aged 40 and above to test a variety of tinted moisturizer formulas. We narrowed these down based on a handful of criteria, including ingredients, texture, coverage, and longevity. These picks were the very best—they helped minimize the appearance of wrinkles, enhanced plumpness in the face, and, overall, resulted in brighter, more radiant skin.
