Rounded head comfortably adjusts to contours like knees and underarms; the closest shave of razors we triedNo built-in light
Long charge time (10 hours)

The best electric razor we’ve tried, this tool effortlessly targets hard-to-reach areas: The included skin-stretcher cap gently tightens the skin and lifts hairs upright, helping the shaver work more effectively and evenly, especially in harder-to-shave areas. Our tester praised the close shave she achieved on her legs and bikini line, thanks to its responsive, slightly rounded head, which glides smoothly over curves and helps prevent irritation by evenly distributing pressure and reducing tugging. At $55 (or $45 if you opt for the model with four accessories instead of seven), it’s worth the investment because it’s irritant free does a great job of cutting hair without leaving skin red or irritated afterward, and gives you a close shave without your skin feeling burned or stripped.

Glamour commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary says:

“This electric razor was by far one of the best I’ve ever tried. While it’s a bit larger than the other razors I’ve used, it gets the job done in just about one swipe every time, even in coarser areas. I found this so good for how close a shave it gives you. It didn’t leave my skin red and irritated, and the hair was visibly gone post-shave, as opposed to just cut short. I liked that this one is waterproof, easy to use in the shower, and it’s become an integral part of my shave routine, especially as we head into warmer months.”
Alanna Martine Kilkeary, Glamour commerce writer

Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs says:

“I’ve tried plenty of electric trimmers that feel harsh, but this one is noticeably gentler—it glides with a soft buzz instead of tugging my skin. I used it wet and dry, and it’s especially good for quick touch-ups on legs and underarms when you don’t have time for a full rinse. In the shower with shaving cream, it worked well as both a trimmer and razor (not quite as close as a manual shave, but way softer on my skin). My only note is that its bulkier head isn’t as easily able to navigate crevices like the area under my knees.” —Malia Griggs, Glamour commerce editor

Works all over the bodyDock tips easily
Ceramic blades stay sharper than steelBattery life is shorter than some other models
Ergonomic, waterproof design

The Meridian pick isn’t a traditional razor—it’s technically a bikini trimmer—but it earns a spot here for being one of the safest ways to groom sensitive areas like your underarms, beard, groin, and bikini line without irritation or nicks. Its ceramic blades resist rust and stay sharper longer than steel, delivering an even trim that gets impressively close while staying gentle on skin. The waterproof design works in or out of the shower, and a built-in travel lock keeps it from turning on in your bag. Our editors have had their Meridian electric trimmers for about two years now, and report that they work just as well as they did straight out of the box, making it the most durable of the bunch.

Glamour’s Griggs says:

“I can easily shift between different length options, whether I want to even out my hair, buzz it, or basically shave it down to the skin. I love that it’s waterproof, so I can take it in the shower, and the travel lock keeps it from accidentally flipping on inside my toiletry bag. It’s sturdy enough to handle even coarse, curly pubes, and I feel totally comfortable using it all over my bikini region without it ever cutting or irritating my skin.” —M.G.

Glamour’s Kilkeary says:

“I’ve tried a handful of bikini trimmers, and a lot of them end up leaving my skin looking red and irritated. This gentle trimmer has yet to do so, and is actually one of the more gentle options I’ve tried. The blades don’t run too fast and don’t feel aggressive on the skin. It leaves me with a silky, close shave every time and has become a staple in my shower.” —A.M.K.

Functions as razor and trimmer

This sensitive-friendly pick smoothly functions as both a razor and a trimmer: The Fur Trim is a two-in-one tool that switches between a bikini trimmer and an electric shaver. Snap on the grooming comb to tidy up to your preferred length (there are three settings), or use the sleek blade head when you’re going for a supersmooth, Brazilian-style finish. It delivers an extremely close shave: Unlike foil models, the shaving attachment doesn’t have a guard, so it requires a careful touch—but it gets incredibly close, which might be exactly what you want, especially in the pubic area. The ceramic blade is also very gentle and won’t leave skin feeling stripped after shaving. The attachable three-blade razor head also features a vitamin E–coated strip to leave skin moisturized and soft.

Glamour’s Griggs says:

“I started by using the trimmer first, and I really liked that this one tool does both trimming and shaving—I didn’t need a separate device. Using the razor felt like switching from a manual to an electric toothbrush; I didn’t have to move it in short strokes or press hard—just held it lightly and let it do the work. The floating, vibrating head gave me a really close shave, especially with my shaving cream. The built-in light helped catch stray hairs around my knees and ankles in my dim bathroom. I did nick myself a couple of times because the head isn’t the most flexible, but overall, it was simple to use, and I’ll definitely keep it in my routine.” —M.G.

This travel-friendly, waterproof razor comes with a grippy handle which allows more precise control so it won’t slip or move out of your hand if you’re using it in the shower. It’s a good pick for someone older or with low grip strength who may have difficulty shaving due to grip. This pick also features floating blades that give you an extremely close shave every time, so that you’re not left with stubble post-shave. The movable head also allows you to get into various nooks like around the knee and around the ankles. And if you prefer to just trim hair, this razor comes with a neat trimmer guard to help control length and customize your routine. Simply throw it in your bag with the plug-in cord, and you can bring it with you whenever you’re on the go. The run time is 30 minutes, so it’ll last quite a while, even if you’re on a weeklong trip.

Glamour’s Kilkeary says:

“I was able to easily use this razor in the shower, and it pretty much caught all the hairs on my legs in just two passes. It’s lighter than it looks, and I didn’t experience any razor burn or irritation on dry spots (which I have a few of on my legs due to eczema). The compact head of this wet and dry shaver lets you reach every crevice of your bikini area and is gentle while doing so. The tiny blades do a great job of getting a close shave in just a few passes. The blades are small and won’t irritate your skin or leave you feeling red and stripped. If you often struggle with razor bumps on the bikini line, this tool will help mitigate this and give you silky, smooth skin. No need for charging cords or docks; this trimmer is powered by two AA batteries and lasts a long time, making it a great pick for travel too.

Glamour’s Kilkeary says:

“This gentle trimmer did a great job of grooming my bikini hairs without leaving stubborn bumps and redness. The precision tip caught a lot of hair during my first pass. For a really clean shave, I recommend going over the area twice to pick up any strays left behind, but even with both passes, my skin was left smooth and nonirritated. It’s great on delicate areas, and I’ll definitely be using this well into summertime, possibly in place of waxing!” —A.M.K.

The electric razors we tested, but didn’t include

  • The under-$20 Remington Smooth & Silky On-the-Go Shaver is a smart pick for travel—compact, lightweight, and easy to toss in a toiletry bag—and great to have on hand for quick leg and underarm touch-ups, especially if it slips your mind in the shower. The razor is easy to hold, and the two main blades are mounted at different angles, so it works on all sorts of body parts. While we like this one for on-the-go use, we removed it from our list because it didn’t give us a close enough shave compared to the brand’s Smooth and Silky razor.
  • The Finishing Touch Flawless Bikini Shaver and Trimmer is a budget-friendly, battery-powered option with a light for precision, but it only works on dry skin. Our tester liked the built-in light but found the angled head awkward—especially for left-handed use—and noted some irritation afterward. We ultimately had to cut it from the list because the product is sadly no longer available!
  • The RoseSkinCo.4D Shaver is a great option for facial hair because it helps remove hair and fuzz on all contours of the face. It excels at tackling cheek fuzz and includes a handy pop-out precision trimmer for tricky spots like between the eyebrows. We removed it from the list because there are smaller, more precise facial hair removal tools we’ve used.
  • We also tried the Gillette Venus Gentle Electric Trimmer, which we really liked. It’s suitable for all hair types (including coarse), is cordless, and can be used either wet or dry. This razor is one of the easiest to clean, as well, because it has a single line of blades that can be rinsed under water without having to take it apart. We sadly removed it from this list because it’s currently unavailable to shop for.

Frequently asked questions

How to shop for an electric razor

  • Think about where you’ll shave most often. Larger areas like legs benefit from wider shaving heads, while smaller or contoured spots—like the bikini line or underarms—are easier to manage with more compact, precise designs.
  • Match the razor to your grooming style. If you like options, look for devices with multiple attachments or interchangeable heads for both trimming and shaving.
  • Prioritize comfort and control. An ergonomic handle can help you navigate curves and harder-to-reach areas more easily.
  • Go cordless and waterproof, if possible. These features let you shave in the shower and make it easier to fit grooming into your routine, wherever you are.
  • Look for a long-lasting battery. A solid charge means less time plugged in and more reliable performance.
  • Opt for easy-to-clean designs. Built-up hair, skin, or product can dull performance and trigger irritation—look for razors that rinse clean or come with cleaning tools.
  • Consider your skin’s sensitivity. If you’re prone to irritation, choose a razor designed for sensitive skin or one with features such as hypoallergenic foils or a rounded head.

Do dermatologists recommend electric razors?

Yes. Especially for people who struggle with razor bumps or chronic irritation. “Electric razors often shave slightly above the skin surface, which reduces the risk of hairs curling back into the skin and causing ingrown hairs,” says Hope Mitchell, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Mitchell Dermatology. Something to note: They’re not always as close as a blade shave, but they’re often a healthier option for the skin.

How to use an electric razor

  1. Prep your skin. Start by exfoliating and cleaning the bikini area, which removes dead skin cells, creates a smooth shave, and reduces the risk of irritation and ingrown hair. Trimming or shaving in the shower will be more comfortable than shaving dry, since the force required to cut through hair is lower than when it’s dry, says Caitlin Orszulak, senior scientist at P&G Grooming.
  2. How to shave your face: When shaving, apply light pressure and go against the grain for a closer shave. A foil razor works best here—stick to short, straight strokes and keep the skin taut for better contact.
  3. How to shave your body: For the body (like legs), foil razors perform well on flatter areas, while rotary razors may feel more comfortable on curves such as knees or underarms. Move in long, steady motions and let the razor glide—avoid pressing down.
  4. How to shave your bikini area: In the intimate region where skin is more sensitive, Rachel Westbay, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical, recommends reaching for a foil razor or a bikini trimmer, which are more precise and gentler. Stick to slow, careful passes, and start with a guard or trimming attachment, if your device includes one, to help prevent nicks.

How do you avoid irritation when using an electric razor?

Prep is everything. Start by cleansing the skin with a gentle exfoliator to rid it of dead skin cells. Next, when you shave matters too. “Shaving right after a warm shower is ülkü because the hair is softer and easier to cut,” says Dr. Mitchell. When shaving, she recommends using light pressure—pressing too hard can increase friction and irritation. “I also recommend shaving in the direction the hair grows, especially if you’re prone to ingrowns.”

What are the two different types of electric razors?

Electric razors typically come in two main forms, designed for convenience and comfort but slightly different depending on where you are shaving on your body. “Foil razors have a thin, straight layer of metal that covers the blades while they oscillate, which is great for precision and sensitive skin,” says Dr. Westbay. “Rotary razors have round, spinning heads that adjust to the curves of your face or body.” While it’s completely up to preference of which razor you prefer, foil razors tend to be more effective on flatter areas (think: legs, arms), while rotary razors can help get into nooks and crannies, like around the bikini line and underarms.

What’s the difference between epilators, electric razors, and trimmers?

An electric razor (or shaver) cuts hair right at the skin’s surface. It’s quick, painless, and low-risk for nicks, but regrowth appears within a few days. For women, razors are a go-to for everyday use on legs, underarms, and even the bikini line—especially foil razors, which are more precise and gentle on sensitive skin.

A woman’s electric epilator, by contrast, removes hair from the root using dozens of tiny tweezers. The process can feel more uncomfortable, but it leaves skin smoother for much longer—up to four weeks before regrowth. Dermatologists say epilators are best for areas like the legs and arms, but may be too harsh for sensitive spots like the bikini line.

A trimmer doesn’t shave hair down to the skin; instead, it shortens strands to an even length using a guard and an oscillating blade. This is the gentlest of the three, and they often come with comb attachments so you can choose how much length to keep.

TL;DR: Electric razors and electric shavers are the fastest and smoothest option, epilators deliver longer-lasting results, and trimmers are the gentlest choice for precision and sensitive skin.

What are the best electric razors for legs and the bikini area?

Most experts agree that electric trimmers and foil razors designed specifically for the pubic region are your best bet for the bikini area—especially if you have sensitive skin. “An electric trimmer is often recommended, as it’s more gentle and less likely to cause irritation,” says Faisal Al-Jabri, founder and CEO of beauty and skin deva brand RoseSkinCo. He notes that trimmers also offer better control and customizable length settings, so you can decide whether you want to tidy up or trim hair down to nearly bare.

Foil razors are another smart option—they’re precise, glide more gently, and often come with attachments designed to reduce the risk of nicks. In contrast, standard rotary razors not designed for pubic hair can cause excessive friction, leading to razor burn or ingrown hairs.

What are the most hygienic electric razors for women?

The most hygienic razors are waterproof and designed for quick rinsing, since that prevents buildup that can cause irritation. Materials matter too. Hypoallergenic stainless-steel foils are durable, rust-resistant, and safe for most skin types. Some trimmers use ceramic blades, which hold sharpness longer and are highly resistant to bacteria and corrosion.

If your skin is irritated after shaving, what should you do?

First, stop shaving until the skin calms down. “Apply a gentle fragrance-free moisturizer, and if the irritation is significant, a short course of over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation,” says Dr. Mitchell. If bumps develop, you can introduce a gentle exfoliant, such as salicylic acid, evvel the skin is no longer raw or tender.

How we tested

We started by researching 30 electric razors, foil shavers, trimmers, and epilators, drawing on dermatologist recommendations, expert interviews, and best-seller lists from major retailers. From there, we selected 13 models to test based on criteria like price range, features, and availability. Glamour contributors then used each razor across multiple areas, according to each product’s recommended use—on the legs, underarms, bikini line, upper lip, and cheeks.

Each razor was tested at least twice before testers provided detailed feedback to our shopping team across these categories:

  • Ease of use: How seamlessly the razor handled trickier spots like knees, ankles, and the bikini line
  • Comfort: Whether the skin felt irritated, nicked, or tugged
  • Battery life: How long the tool lasted on a full charge, and whether it was rechargeable
  • Waterproofness: Performance both wet (in the shower with cream) and dry
  • Cleanliness: Whether hair and buildup are rinsed or brushed out easily
  • Value: How well it held up over multiple uses compared to its price point

Models we didn’t include often missed the mark on comfort (some tugged or irritated sensitive skin), battery life (dying before finishing a full shave), or overall value (not offering enough features for the price). The final list reflects the razors that balanced performance, comfort, and reliability—the ones our testers said they’d actually keep using in their own routines.
