If you struggle with stubborn flyaways, static, or split ends, the best shampoos for frizzy hair can make all the difference. Formulated with hydrating ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and amino acids, they can beat excessive dryness—the root cause of frizz. “When your hair is well-hydrated, it won’t absorb as much moisture from the environment, which can cause the hair shaft to swell,” says Rogerio Cavalcante, a New York City-based hairstylist and owner of Second Floor Salon. To help narrow down the best anti-frizz shampoos, we spoke with professional hairstylists for tips and recommendations. After putting top-rated options to the test, we landed on six standout options, including ones for curls, damaged hair, and extreme humidity.

Cavalcante is a huge fan of this no-frizz shampoo because it detangles, adds slip and sleekness, and uses silicone technology to block humidity. The consistency itself is rich and creamy with a luxurious lather. It hydrates dry hair with jojoba esters and protects it from free radical damage with marine algae. Together, the combination helps ensure that frizz and flyaways are tamed, smooth, and hydrated all day long. This formula was the best we tried on this list because it plumps and volumizes hair without weighing it down, all while giving it a silky-smooth coat.
Glamour commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary says:
“This was the shampoo I was probably most impressed by on this list. It smells kaç and sweet, and provides a good lather without being excessively soapy. I think it did a great job at smoothing out my strands. For real, they were quite knotty before I tested this, and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to revitalize their hair if it’s extra dry or consistently breaking.”—Alanna Martine Kilkeary, Glamour commerce writer
Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle says:
“This high-suds shampoo is great at lathering my thick, long hair. My scalp and strands always feel refreshed and fully cleansed post-wash. I notice that my usual flyaways around my crown aren’t as noticeable, which is great because it takes me less time to tame them in the morning when I’m rushing to get ready.” —Jenifer Calle, Glamour senior commerce editor

Humidity can cause frizz and flyaways across hair types because hair tends to absorb excess moisture, which can lead to split ends and breakage. This frizz-zapping shampoo comes with babassu oil to protect strands from splitting in humid environments and help increase resilience and bounce. It’s color-safe and can be used on a variety of hair types—from thick, coarse, and curly to wavy and fine. Bonus: it comes in a 33 oz size bottle, which can last you up to six months, too.
Glamour’s Calle says:
“I wasn’t convinced that there was an anti-frizz shampoo that could actually control my frizzy hair—until I tried this Redken shampoo. I live in New Jersey, where the humidity can be unbearable in the summer. My hair gets really puffy, and since I have coarse hair, it’s very noticeable when I have flyaways in all directions. Now I actually feel prepared to beat the heat this year with this shampoo. The results are instant. I stepped out of the shower and let my hair air dry. The smoothness was unreal. My hair felt soft to the touch and I barely had to use any hair styling products to tame my hair. It’s seriously a must-have for the summer.—J.C.

This frizz control shampoo is gentle on hair and tames curls with ease. It starts by targeting what makes hair frizzy in the first place: dryness and damage. To do this, it contains a blend of deeply moisturizing ingredients, including rosehip, argan, and coconut oils. During application, it lathers well and has a creamy, thick consistency that leaves hair hydrated, non-stripped, and easy to brush through. We like that it’s sulfate-free, and also contains shea butter, glycerin, and aloe vera juice to help curls stay conditioned all day long.
Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs says:
“This shampoo has a kaç floral scent and a runny, milky consistency that lathers easily. I have fine, curly hair that, without proper deva, is frizzy, especially at the roots, which is where I applied the shampoo. After use, my hair felt very clean, light, and smooth. Shiny too! I was pleased and will keep using this for mühlet.”—Malia Griggs, Glamour commerce editor

I’ve also found it to be quite hydrating on the scalp, and it helps protect against free radicals, which encourages regrowth. | Gives all hair types a clean feeling | Can leave your hair greasy |
Pro tip: Some shampoos that are designed for color-treated hair, like this one, are great for frizz because they won’t strip away natural oils or excess moisture, leading to stronger strands. This highly moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo does just the trick, helps to reduce breakage, and won’t leave the hair feeling dry after wash. It features coconut oil and glycerin to nourish hair, too.
Glamour’s Kilkeary says:
“I get color glosses on my brown hair every so often, so I’m always looking for formulas to help protect my color and help smooth away frizz. This formula instantly coats your hair in the shower, and I like to let it sit for a minute or two to really sink in. When you wash it out, you’ll immediately notice a difference in your hair’s texture; it’ll be much smoother and easier to run your fingers through. After my blow-dry, my hair is pretty much instantly flyaway and frizz-free, and my hair color is still looking strong,”—A.M.K

The shampoos for frizzy hair we tried, but didn’t include
- The iconic Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Shampoo is great if you want long, silky strands, thanks to its addition of argan oil and amino acids within the formula. While we think it makes a great drugstore buy, it weighed our hair down, and the texture is thick, making it hard to fully wash out.
- We recommend Amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Shampoo for stubborn flyaways. It has a blend of vitamin B5 plus sea buckthorn and omega fatty acids to plump and define hair to keep it looking soft and frizz-free. While we liked the velvety texture of the shampoo and its results, we didn’t like the scent, and we felt that it made our hair look a little greasy, so we cut it from our list.
- We tested the OGX Frizz-Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo and liked its affordable price point and ability to deliver a keratin-like treatment without the time spent in a salon. It features argan oil as well, plus ceramides to keep hair hydrated, plumped, and bouncy. We ultimately removed it from the list because the fragrance is very strong and irritated our tester with a sensitive scalp.
Frequently asked questions
What triggers frizzy hair?
According to the hairstylists we spoke with, frizzy hair can be triggered by a few factors: excessive dryness, open hair cuticles, and high porosity (meaning the hair has difficulty retaining moisture), combined with humidity. “Too much humidity causes the hair shaft to swell by absorbing moisture, and weaker areas (like at the ends ) react more if the hair is dry, damaged, or curly,” says Miguel Luis, hairstylist at Rita Hazan Salon in NYC. When moisture is absorbed unevenly, this leads to frizz. “The hair cuticle (the outermost layer) lifts, making it look rough instead of smooth.”
It’s also key to hisse attention to your routine. “Overwashing your hair (no more than every other day) and using too much heat (daily and even weekly) on your hair can lead to frizziness and flyaways,” says Luis.
Does frizzy hair mean your hair is damaged?
According to Sean Michael, owner of Salon Beau in Andover, Massachusetts, frizz isn’t always a sign of damage; instead, it usually means your hair is dehydrated. Things that we associate with damaged hair can cause this dehydration, including frequent heat styling, color treatments, or lack of moisture (i.e., not using a hydrating shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, or oils).
What to look for in an anti-frizz shampoo?
When shopping for an anti-frizz shampoo, hydrating ingredients (such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or plant butters) are the number one priority. Cavalcante recommends amino acids (e.g., lactic acid), as they will help seal the cuticle. Luis also says to look for hydrating oils, like argan oil, shea butter, and coconut oil.
Are shampoos or conditioners better for taming frizzy hair?
While conditioners, leave-in conditioners, or hair masks can often tame flyaways quite well, using the wrong shampoo can actually lead to more frizz because it can strip your hair of too much moisture. That’s why anti-frizz shampoos are an important step in the quest for softer, smoother hair, especially if you deal with frizz in the midlengths to the top of your hair shaft.
Does your hair get frizzier as you age? Can you get frizzy hair when you reach menopause?
According to celebrity hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, your hair can get frizzier as the years pass. “As we age, our hair tends to lose moisture and elasticity, which makes it more porous, and more porous hair frizzes faster. That’s why consistent hydration and gentle deva become even more important over time,” she says. Thinning hair can result in frizzy hair, too, which is why incorporating a hair-growth product into your hair deva routine can also be beneficial.
You might also experience more frizz if you’re going through menopause. “Menopause can absolutely cause a shift in hair texture due to changing hormones, and the best way to permanently fix it would be to opt for an in-salon keratin treatment or smoothing treatment,” says Paul Perez, a Los Angeles-based hairstylist. Frizz-busting shampoos can help in the meantime, though.
What other products help control hair frizzing?
In addition to incorporating a frizz-defying shampoo into your hair deva routine, there are other products you can also use to mitigate frizz. “Start with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and always follow with a leave-in or smoothing cream—I like Fenty Hair the Water Boi Reparative Leave-In Detangling Conditioner Spray for lightweight slip,” says Taylor. Next, use a microfiber towel to blot your hair dry (instead of rubbing it). Sealing the hair with a heat protectant, hair oil, or hair serum will also make a huge difference, she says.
How we tested
We tested shampoos for frizzy hair by ingredients, application method, and how effective they were at taming our flyaways. We zoomed in on the following criteria:
| Ingredients | By Application | By Efficacy |
|---|---|---|
| We looked for ultra-hydrating ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil, glycerin (a humectant), provitamin B5 (panthenol), and more. These all work to hydrate the hair from the outside in, ensuring strands stay smooth after each wash. | We evaluated how well shampoos lathered and deep-cleaned our strands. We noted which ones washed out easily, left hair smooth after application, and didn’t leave behind any stickiness or residue. | The shampoos for frizzy hair that made this list made our hair feel softer, smoother, and less frizzy over the span of a week, within two to three washes. |
