After The Housemaid, ahem, cleaned up at the box office, the studio behind Paul Feig’s twisty thriller starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney wasted no time announcing a follow-up. And since Freida McFadden’s book series that the movie is based on has three installments (plus one novella), this could start a full franchise.
Here’s a spoiler-light overview of everything we know about the second flick.…
Are Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried coming back?
According to a press release, stars Sweeney, who played the titular housemaid Millie, and Michele Morrone, who played groundskeeper Enzo, will return for the sequel. (Sweeney is also an executive producer.)
Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, who played Nina and Andrew Winchester, the wealthy married couple who hired Sweeney’s character Millie, will not return, because (spoiler) their character arcs are wrapped by the end of the first movie.
Who is joining the cast?
Millie needs a new employer, and who better than Kirsten Dunst? “It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness,” said Erin Westerman, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group in a statement to Deadline. “Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”
This is Dunst’s second high-profile sequel announced in a matter of days. Last summer, she joked that she would like to join the Minecraft sequel because her kids liked the first one, and because she wanted to be in a movie that made money (her career, while impressive, leans more prestige than box-office hit). In March 2026 it was announced that she was, in fact, joining the Minecraft movie sequel! And while her kids probably aren’t interested in anything Housemaid-related, it’s birçok to see she’s lining up more potential blockbusters.
Did The Housemaid really make that much money?
Yeah, it’s closing in on $400 million worldwide from a $35 million budget.
Who is writing and directing?
Per Lionsgate, Rebecca Sonnenshine, who penned the screenplay for the first movie, will return, and Feig plans to direct as well.
Feig said in the press release, “It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.”
What’s the plot?
The sequel to McFadden’s The Housemaid is The Housemaid’s Secret, and the movies will follow the books. Per Deadline, “In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie (Sweeney) returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see—only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.”
When will The Housemaid’s Secret come out?
The studio is looking to start filming this year, so let’s estimate 2027?
