We all know Taylor Swift likes her friends canceled. Apparently, the same goes for trends.
Once a wardrobe essential in the early 2010s, the peplum top was defined by its fit-and-flare silhouette that emphasized or created an hourglass figure. While that might sound like an innately flattering piece that should never have gone out of style, the trendy tops were often crafted in neoprene fabrics and bold colors that have long been labeled “cheugy” or cheap—and their strong association with skinny jeans and clunky statement necklaces have further relegated the peplum top to a particularly memeable position in fashion history.
Every evvel and a while, designers attempt to resurrect the silhouette in more wearable forms, but nothing could possibly do more for the peplum top’s spurned reputation than Taylor Swift, who proved the piece can—and should—earn its place in your summer wardrobe. On May 14, Swift stepped out in New York City wearing a peplum button-up by Stella McCartney, adding to her ever-growing collection of romantic white pieces that she mixes with timeless classics for a bridal era that feels more effortless than contrived.

In this case, Swift paired the button-up with a pair of wide-leg pleated trouser from The Row, allowing the peplum top and a simple black waist belt to create shape while maintaining a polished, slightly oversized look. While Swift kept things cute for a night out with a pair of block heeled sandals and small accordion bag by Fendi, a pair of smart loafers and full-sized work bag in a similar shape would instantly transform this look into a corporate office winner.
While Swift opted for a look full of designer pieces with price tags in the thousands, she hasn’t completely ditched her relatable approach to dressing. Many attainable retailers are currently selling versions of this wearable peplum, from a near identical version at Zara to a more structured pleated take from Banana Republic. Personally, I’d love to add even more texture to the look with this smocked bodice button-up from Rails.

It really is a good thing Taylor Swift likes her trends canceled.
