Uoma Beauty has been making waves since the brand dropped in 2018. Founded by beauty-industry vet Sharon Chuter, the brand was created to celebrate truly diverse beauty, and cater to women who had been largely been ignored by the industry at large. The brand’s first launch included its signature Say What?! Foundation, which is not only available in a huge range of 51 shades, divided into six “skin kin” categories, with different formulas based on the specific skin needs of each shade range. The brand has since launched super-pigmented lipsticks made to pop on all skin tones, and a mascara made to lengthen even the shortest lashes—which, per the brand are more common in WOC than they are white women.

Chuter has put her money where her mouth is time and time again, showing that she means serious business when it comes to changing the industry for the better.  In the summer of 2020 she launched Pull Up for Change, asking beauty brands to reveal the actual percentage of Black employees on their payrolls, particularly at the leadership level. She’s also spearheaded the Make It Black campaign, which raises money for up-and-coming Black founders through limited edition products, and aims to change the dictionary definition of the word black in the dictionary to one with no negative connotations.

It’s not all heavy though, and Uoma is as much about celebrating Black beauty (or any beauty, really) as it is about making industry-shaking changes. That’s why the line is packed with bright color, reflective shimmer, cheeky names, and incredibly high-coverage formulas that everyone can enjoy. This universal appeal is why we’re often asked if the brand is worth it, and the answer is firmly “Hell yes.” Wondering where to start? We had Glamour staffers put the line to the test. Read on for the best Uoma Beauty products.

Uoma Beauty Brow-Fro Baby Hair Brow Pencil

$22

Uoma Beauty

The Uoma brow pencil is brush, pencil, and highlighter all in one—what else could I ask for? Not only is the color match perfect, but the formula glides on so smooth. After trying different pencils and gels, I was starting to give up on finding a brow stick that had everything I was looking for. I found that some colors were too warm for me, while the Uoma has an ashy color that gives it a more natural look. I’ve bought it three times already. —Gabriella Iannetta, associate director of audience development

Uoma Beauty Stay Woke Luminous Brightening Concealer

$25

Uoma Beauty

I’ve always been a foundation girl, and—up until the cursed year 2020—never really needed much concealer in addition to whatever formula I was loving at the moment. But then a little thing called COVID happened, and a potent combination of stress, nonstop dry apartment air, and weird changes in my sleep habits have revealed some dark circles and general puffiness under my eyes that required some extra TLC. My issue with concealer has always been cakey-ness, so I was pleasantly surprised by Uoma’s formula. It not only didn’t crease, but it brightened up my entire face with only a few small dots with its smooth, satiny finish. —Perrie Samotin, digital director

Uoma Beauty Black Magic High-Shine Lipstick

$24

Uoma Beauty

In middle school I was a huge fan of MAC’s Lipglass in each and every color—especially when said colors included glitter. So when I opened up the Black Magic tube and the stick glittered like a holiday isim, I was a bit concerned that my middle school self would resurface. Rest assured, Uoma’s high shine lipstick is anything but a Pen15 throwback. The shimmer, gloss and color all come together in a perfect subtle balance, so despite my first reaction, this has become my go-to everyday lipstick. The color is light enough to swipe on for a natural daytime look, while the low-key shine adds the fun and playfulness we all need these days. —Caitlin Brody, entertainment director

Uoma Beauty Say What?! Foundation

$39

Uoma Beauty

If you’re a full-coverage gal like me, you’ll love this foundation. It covers all my dark spots and acne scars and has a beautiful finish that looks almost airbrushed. The shade range is extensive (51 shades!) and is broken up into six different groupings instead of the standard light, medium, and dark. As someone with tan skin, I have trouble finding a foundation that has great midrange options. —Ariana Yaptangco, senior beauty editor

Uoma Beauty Drama Bomb Extreme Volume Nourishing Mascara

$20

Uoma Beauty

I usually see an hourglass-shaped brush and run for the hills—they tend to just glop product onto my short, sparse lashes—but this one delivered. It really did grab every single lash without clumping and made them look longer and fuller. Not only does the shape of the brush add tons of volume, but it really curls and opens my lashes so it looks kaç and lifted. The whipped formula doesn’t clump no matter how many coats I apply‚ though it’s definitely dramatic, and it stays on all day with no flaking. I’m a fan. —Bella Cacciatore, beauty writer

Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick

$24

Uoma Beauty

I have always been a fan of a bold lip, and the Badass Icon Matte lipstick gives me just that. The lipstick goes on lightweight and is hydrating, while the color is harika pigmented—you really only need one swipe and you’re good for hours. My lipstick style has tweaked slightly during the pandemic: In the before times, I might have applied this color on my way out the door to work, and now I’d save it for more of a nighttime look. But I’m obsessed nonetheless. —C.B.

Uoma Beauty Boss Gloss Pure Colour Lip Gloss

$22

Uoma Beauty

I was a big lipstick gal pre-COVID, but since masking and working from home are still a part of daily life (sigh), I’m more into tints these days. This formula is harika unique; it’s somewhere between a gloss, a stain, and a balm. It has a plush, cushy texture that feels üstün hydrating but not tacky, and it leaves behind a kaç, glossy shine. Just one coat gives me a sheer tint, but if I’m craving a little more, I can layer it up for full-on color. —B.C.

Uoma Beauty Black Magic Allure Color Palette

$44

Uoma Beauty

I’m not a day-to-day eye shadow wearer, so when I do use it, I want to pull out all the stops. This palette perfectly fits the bill. The matte shades are creamy and pigmented, and they look so pretty as a sheer wash or built up for a punchier shade. But where it really shines (literally) is the shimmer shades, which melt right into the skin and have almost a crushed metal effect. The true gold of Divine is the ultimate going-out shade, while I love how the earthy shimmers bring out the green in my hazel eyes. —B.C.

Uoma Beauty Brow-Fro Blow Out Gel

$22

Uoma Beauty

Obsessed! I had never used any kind of brow product before trying Blow Out, and I absolutely loved it. I am lucky to have naturally thick brows, but a few brushes of Blow Out helped to keep their shape throughout the day, add just a wee bit of fullness, and make my eyes pop—all while looking totally natural. I will absolutely be adding this to my daily routine. —C.B.

Uoma Beauty Double Take Contour Stick

$40

Uoma Beauty

As someone who doesn’t wear a whole lot of makeup, I was surprised how much I loved the Uoma contour stick. It’s something I can grab whether I’m doing a full-face evening look or just want a little something over my moisturizer. Not only is it easy to use, it blends in so quickly and doesn’t feel heavy on my face. Sometimes I’ll even use the highlighter as an eye shadow, completing my look with just one product. —G.I.

$18

Uoma Beauty

Superfine yet sturdy, this liner’s pen tip doesn’t bend, so it’s easier to control if like me, you’ve been attempting to master the cat eye throughout the pandemic. (It’s still very much a work in progress.)  —C.B.

Uoma Beauty Badass MF Matte Filler Lip Liner

$16

Uoma Beauty

I have become a recent lip liner addict, and this is one of my favorites. It has a classic waxy formula that truly sticks around even after masking or sipping, but still is creamy enough that it just glides right on when I apply it. The pinky-nude shade Angelou is perfect for slightly overlining my lips for a plumped effect, but I love that there’s a pretty wide range of nudes to match any skin tone. —B.C.

Uoma Beauty High Life Face Palette

$39

Uoma Beauty

I love a good contour/blush moment and this palette blends out like a dream. I usually don’t apply highlighter (I’ve got an oily face as it is), but these two leave the prettiest shimmer with just a small dusting. The blush is very buildable, making it easy to wear for everyday or to amp up at nighttime when I’m feeling more fun. —A.Y.
