What do we know about The Pitt season 3? Read on to find out. Warning: spoilers from season 2 ahead.

Before season 2 of The Pitt even made it to air, HBO officially renewed the Emmy-winning medical procedural for a third season. Yep, The Pitt season 3 is officially confirmed! HBO CEO Casey Bloys revealed the good news during the Los Angeles premiere of season 2 on January 7, 2026.

Since its debut in January 2025, The Pitt has been both a commercial and a critical success for the streamer. By mid-season last year, the show was averaging more than 10 million viewers, making it one of HBO Max’s most successful shows ever. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the US audience for the season 2 premiere was up 200% compared to the season 1 premiere during the same time frame. Critics’ ratings have also remained strong. As of publishing, season 2 has a 99% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to winning three Emmys last September for season 1, The Pitt received two Golden Globe Awards: Noah Wyle won best male actor in a television series (drama), and the show won best television series (drama). The show picked up even more accolades throughout awards season, receiving Critics’ Choice awards, Actor awards, Writers Guild awards, and many more. Based on the glowing reviews rolling in for season 2, we assume that these wins are just the beginning. Variety even posited that the show is on track to build an “Emmy dynasty,” with potential nominations for Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Shawn Hatosy—all of whom were also nominated in season 1—as well as Taylor Dearden, Sepideh Moafi, Patrick Ball, and Gerran Howell.

To say the least, our hopes are high for season 3. Here’s what we know so far about the next season of The Pitt.

Who is returning for The Pitt season 3?

HBO has not confirmed many details yet. However, because many of the cast members from season 1 returned for season 2, we assume they’ll also return for season 3—especially Dr. Robby (Wyle), despite his declining mental health and concerning behavior throughout season 2…

Other OG members of the day shift we’re hoping will stick around include charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), Dr. King (Taylor Dearden), Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell), Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. Javadi (Shabana Azeez), Princess (Kristin Villanueva), and Perlah (Amielynn Abellera).

Who isn’t returning?

Sadly, we have learned Supriya Ganesh will not return to play senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan in season 3. This makes sense given that Dr. Mohan has been staring down the end of her residency throughout season 2, with none of her superiors suggesting she should continue in the ER. That doesn’t mean we’re not sad about it!

No news yet on nurse Jesse Van Horn (Ned Brower), who was arrested by ICE agents during season 2.

What about the night shift?

In some good news, Ayesha Harris has been upgraded to series regular for season 3. Harris has played senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis in both seasons 1 and 2. Frankly, I could use an entire night shift spin-off if we get to see more of Dr. Jack Abbott (Shawn Hatosy) and Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby).

And the season 2 newbies?

Season 2 also gave us some newbies we’d love to see more from, including new nurse Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard), med student Joy Kwon (Irene Choi), and Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi). We could honestly take or leave med student James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson), but the actor seems like a birçok guy!

What will season 3 be about?

We assume season 3 will follow the same format as seasons 1 and 2, where each episode takes place during an hour in a single shift.

One thing we do know—season 3 will “probably not” take place during a holiday, according to Wyle. (Season 2 takes place on July 4.) During an interview with Variety at the season 2 premiere, he also guessed that the time jump between seasons will be shorter. “Ten months was a long jump,” he said. “I don’t think we need to make that long of a jump next time.”

There are several loose ends we expect to be tied up in season 3 as well—namely, did Robby take his sabbatical? Or did he decide to foster Baby Jane Doe after that heartwarming moment in the finale? Did he finally seek help for his declining mental health?

If Robby doesn’t take his sabbatical, what does that mean for Whitaker, who was supposed to take deva of his home while he was on the open road? Will he and Santos become the BFFs we always knew they could be?

I’m also personally invested in Dr. Javadi’s blossoming TikTok med-fluencer career, and her probable pivot to a mental health or neuro specialty, as well as Mel’s interest in her local Renaissance Faire and cosplay in general. Though nothing would bring me more joy than seeing Mel and Santos drowning their sorrows in a weekly karaoke ritual. These girls need a break.

Who is joining the cast for season 3?

We’re not mühlet yet! We’ll update this information when we know more.

When will season 3 premiere?

While we don’t have an exact date yet, we can expect a similar timeline to season 2’s, which premiered roughly a year after season 1. Bloys noted that a procedural show like The Pitt means turnaround time can be a lot quicker and more consistent than, say, a new season of House of the Dragon.

“The annual return is really, really important,” Bloys said in November 2025, per Deadline. “I think as an industry, we’ve gotten away from that, and my hope is for something like The Pitt, we aired it in January [2025], it’s coming back in January [2026]. That kind of habitual viewing, not only week to week, but on an annual basis, is really important in terms of setting habits. I was thrilled not only that it worked; that it won the Emmy on top of that was just cherry on top.”
